The pump is at the heart of a water garden. Without it, water will not circulate to create a healthy and balanced ecosystem. Sunterra pumps circulate water to help prevent breeding conditions for unwanted insects while oxygenating it for plants and fish. Pumps are distinguished by the gallons per hour they produce at one foot of lift or head. All Sunterra pumps are submersible and must be placed in water to function properly. Direct Drive pumps are more powerful and provide higher GPH output than magnetic drive pumps. These pumps are energy efficient, water cooled and use no oil. Direct Drive pumps are designed for use in dirty water applications where the possibility of water impurities is high. All Sunterra pumps are 100% water tested and have a 25 foot power cord. This pump is a 3000 gallons per hour and has a maximum lift of 26 feet. This pump can handle a larger volume of water and can be used in large water garden applications and those with waterfalls.

Installing a French Drain in a Few Easy Steps

!±8± Installing a French Drain in a Few Easy Steps

In reality, a French drain is sort of like a French fry, or French toast -- its actual link to France is tenuous at best, and few people remember why it's named the way it is. In France, fries are called pommes frites, and French toast is pain perdu. And its French name notwithstanding, the French drain is a great way to move water from one place to another, whether you're in Europe or the States.

The French drain is a shallow drainage system, and can be one of the best foundations to an all-encompassing basement waterproofing design. Essentially, it's a perforated pipe in your basement, which allows water to drain away from your home, into a solid, unperforated pipe, which then drains into a retention pond. A dry basement is a priority for any responsible homeowner, since too much moisture around a home's foundation can result in cracks, or worse.

A French drain is the easiest way to keep your basement dry. If you have plenty of time and know-how, you may be able to install one yourself. But hiring a quality basement waterproofing contractor with lots of experience might be a more prudent route, particularly if you have an especially large basement or amount of property, or if your French drain has to be installed under your foundation.

Just to give you an idea of the amount of work involved, here's a quick outline of the process to installing a French drain.

Find your path. This phase of the French drain installation will be where you figure out whether you can do the job yourself, or hire a basement waterproofing company to do it for you. Take a look at your basement: Is there a place where the water is pooling, or any other obvious signs that a specific spot needs drainage? Once you've done this, trace a straight line from this spot, downhill, to a place outside that you can use as a retention pond. Keep gravity in mind at all times, and remember to keep things like trees, underground utilities and other buildings in mind.

Excavate a trench. This is the hard part. The trench should lead from your basement to the retention pond, and should be about eight to twelve inches deep by about six inches wide. You'll be filling it with pipe and gravel, so it needs to be somewhat large.

Fill it back in. Once the trench is dug, lay about two inches of gravel in the bottom. The amount of gravel you use will depend on the length and depth of your French drain, so be sure your measurements are correct before placing your order.

Start laying pipe. This is the most vital part of your French drain. You'll need two types of pipe: Perforated, for the area to be drained, and unperforated, for carrying the water away from the house. The idea here is to allow water to seep into the system through the perforated pipe, then drain away from the house in the unperforated section.

Use gravel to cover the pipe. Use gravel in your French drain instead of dirt. Remember, your goal is to create a porous system that allows water to seep into the perforated pipe. Covering it with dirt would simply create a muddy mess.

Lay sod over the outdoor section. French drains aren't meant to be looked at, right? So be sure the outdoor section is hidden out of sight. Sod is the best way to do this.

How to Clean an Oriental or Area Rug That Has Pet Urine

!±8± How to Clean an Oriental or Area Rug That Has Pet Urine

The first step in cleaning an Oriental or Area rug is pre-inspection. You should identify the type of material it is made out of. Some rugs are hand made and some are machine made. Most hand made rugs do not contain any glue and many are made out of wool. Do not hand wash a rug that contains glue as hand washing will break down the glue. I also do not suggest hand washing a rug that has a cotton backing or rugs that have a similar backing like carpet because these rugs contain glue.

1.Identify the material the rug is made out of. Most wool, nylon, and polypropolene rugs are cleanable if they do not contain glue. I would consult a professional if the one is made of cotton, silk, or Rayon.

2. Vacuum it thoroughly, then test the rug for dye stability with a white cloth and a neutral oriental rug cleaner. Hold for at least 1 minute with the concentrated cleaner. If little to no dye has bled onto the cloth, especially on any pet urine areas as these are likely to be highly alkaline, then you should be safe to proceed. I say "should be safe to proceed" because there is no guarantee that you will not cause damage to the rug by cleaning. There is always a chance of damaging the rug when cleaning. I believe dye migration during the drying period is the leading cause of rug damage from cleaning.

3. Dusting is recommended, but not a requirement. Dusting the rug can be achieved by vacuuming the rug upside down.

preferably on top of a drag mat used for grooming baseball fields as this will help more dirt to fall out of the rug.

4. Wet the rug till soaked with water. You can use a garden hose with the rug on a sloped concrete driveway. Note: the best way to clean would be inside a rug pit made of 3" PVC with a pond liner.

5. Dilute the rug cleaning solution as recommended by the manufacturer and pour onto the rug being sure to have good coverage.

6. Groom solution into the rug and agitate with a large broom or carpet groomer.

7. Allow for dwell time, usually 30 minutes to an hour is good.

8. Rinse. This is where a rug pit is very helpful because you can fill the pit and flush the rug cleaning solution out of the rug easier, and drain with a sump pump. A driveway with a slope works too, it just takes a lot more effort to rinse the rug.

9. Using an acidic carpet and fabric rinsing solution is recommended as a final rinse. It can be added to the rug pit when full or diluted with a 5 gallon bucket of water and poured onto the rug if cleaning in a driveway.

Flushing the rug with water as much as possible is best with either method. I recommend using a carpet wand to assist with flushing the rug along with the water by lightly pushing and dragging it along the rug.

10. Vacuum as much water out of the rug as possible with a portable carpet extractor or truck-mounted carpet extractor and a carpet wand. Hint: Getting the rug as dry as possible at this time is very important.

11. Hang to dry. I recommend building a drying rack with 3" PVC to drape the rug over. Place an air mover at the bottom of the rug to dry as the moisture will fall with gravity to the base of the rug.

12. Wait for drying to complete. This is usually 3-4 days depending on the weather. I recommend drying indoors in a climate controlled environment when possible.

13. Remove rug and inspect.

14. If the rug has fringes, I suggest cleaning them with a browning solution purchased from a professional carpet cleaning supply. Rinse fringes with a portable or truck-mounted carpet cleaning machine with heat. If fringes need more brightening, I suggest carefully applying an oxidizer.

such as stain magic purchased at a carpet cleaning supply store. Allow to dwell. Rinse.

15. if the rug has stretched from hanging to dry then clean the back of the rug with a heated carpet cleaning machine and dry with the rug laying flat upside down with an air mover placed on it.

16. Final inspection. Repeat any step if necessary.

Industrial Strength With an Industrial Sump Pump

!±8± Industrial Strength With an Industrial Sump Pump

Sump pumps have a very important task to perform: the pumping out of water from basements and other low areas of house, bringing water into places where it becomes easier to manage. This means that they only work once in a while depending on the weather in your area, but when they finally do, they are submitted to intense amounts of stress, both in their mechanical parts and their numerous transport paths. This means that sump pumps have to be constructed out of very durable materials, unless they will need to undergo constant repairs which may cost you a lot. An alternative to this is to use an industrial sump pump. This article will show you how in the long run, having an industrial level pump will benefit you much more than a conventional model will ever be able to accomplish.

Industrial pumps are often distinguished from more conventional models by their generally heavier and more durable construction. Made out of such materials as galvanized steel and cast iron and welded and sealed together with industrial strength seals, industrial sump pumps outperform conventional ones, performing for longer periods of time and under much more extreme conditions (extreme hot or cold, large amounts of water flooding into a basement, and so on).

Also, compared to the pumping power of a conventional model of sump pump, industrial pumps are much more able. The industrial sump pump works via powerful motors in order to pump much larger amounts of water away from your home. This added power is a boon to anybody who stores valuable items in their basement, as the possibility of anything getting damaged by waterlog becomes much less. This is also a great benefit for anybody who uses their basement for business related matters, as valuable stock is preserved and protected when a pump as powerful as this one is put into use, ensuring the safety of your livelihood.

In addition to the extra horsepower doing a big part in helping to protect whatever investments you keep in your basement, industrial pumps also help to keep your foundations stable. This is because without the aid of such a powerful pump, strong currents of water that may be tainted with all sorts of substances and debris may wreak havoc on your foundations, wearing them down and increasing the probability that your house may collapse unto itself. Having one of these, then, not only makes you more comfortable with whatever you keep in your basement, it also actually has the potential to make your house last much longer.
